My HSA balance: $37,400. Age 34. I haven't spent $1 of it on medical bills in 4 years, even though I had $4,200 in bills.
Sounds crazy? HSA is the ONLY account in America that's triple tax-free: tax-deductible in, grows tax-free, out tax-free for medical. Better than 401k and Roth combined.
But 90% of people use it wrong - they spend it like an FSA. I use it as retirement account.
HSA vs FSA: The Difference That Costs You $50k
FSA: $3,300/year max 2026, use it or lose it by Dec 31, employer owns it, can't invest properly, rolls over $640 max. If you quit job, you lose it.
HSA: $4,300 individual / $8,550 family 2026, rolls over forever, YOU own it, can invest in S&P 500, grows forever. If you quit job, it goes with you. At 65, you can withdraw for anything (just pay income tax like 401k, but medical still tax-free).
Example: $8,550/year family HSA invested at 8% for 25 years = $622,000 tax-free for medical in retirement. Average couple needs $315k for medical in retirement (Fidelity). HSA covers it all tax-free.
How I Do The HSA Hack (Pay Medical Out of Pocket, Save Receipts)
2022: $1,200 dentist bill. Paid from checking, NOT HSA. Took photo of receipt, saved to Google Drive folder "HSA Receipts 2022".
2023: $900 ER copay. Paid from checking, saved receipt.
2024: $2,100 kid's braces. Paid from checking, saved receipt.
HSA invested in FSKAX total market fund, growing at 9%. Those receipts are worth $4,200 - I can withdraw $4,200 from HSA tax-free ANYTIME in future, even 30 years from now, as long as I have receipts. No time limit.
So HSA is growing, and I have $4,200 emergency cash I can pull tax-free tomorrow if I need it. Best emergency fund ever.

How to Get an HSA (You Need High Deductible Plan)
You only get HSA if you have HDHP: deductible $1,650+ individual / $3,300+ family in 2026. Check open enrollment - HDHP + HSA often cheaper than PPO when you do math.
My HDHP: $420/month premium vs PPO $610/month = $190/month savings x 12 = $2,280 savings + employer puts $1,000 into HSA. So I save $3,280/year BEFORE tax benefits.
Open HSA at Fidelity - zero fees, invest in FSKAX or VTI. Avoid HealthEquity and Optum - they charge 0.3% fees. Fidelity is free.
Contribute max: $8,550 family 2026. If you can't max, at least contribute enough to get employer match, then invest 100% in stocks if you're under 50.
