At 698 credit, I got denied for everything. At 761, I got approved for $42,500 in credit limits in one week.
I was angry about all the interest I paid for years, so I became obsessed with cashback. Last year, I made $3,247 back. Not points, not travel fluff. Real cash deposited to my checking.
Here are the exact 3 cards I use and how I rotate them.
The $3,200 Cashback Setup (No Annual Fees)
Card 1: Chase Freedom Unlimited - Everything at 1.5%. This is my daily driver. Groceries, gas, Amazon, anything not in a bonus category. I put $18,000/year on it. That's $270 back. Plus the $200 bonus when you spend $500 in 3 months.
Card 2: Chase Freedom Flex - 5% Rotating Categories. Q1 gas stations, Q2 groceries, Q3 restaurants, Q4 Amazon. I max the $1,500 quarterly cap every quarter. That's $1,500 x 4 x 5% = $300/year. But I buy gift cards at grocery stores during 5% quarter to stack more.
Card 3: Citi Custom Cash - 5% on Highest Category. This one is genius. It automatically gives 5% on whatever category you spend most in that month, up to $500. Mine is always restaurants. I spend ~$450/month eating out, that's $22.50/month = $270/year.
But the real trick: All Chase points can be transferred to Chase Sapphire Preferred for 25% more value if you travel. My $570 from Freedom cards becomes $712 in travel. I usually just cash out though.
Why I Don't Use Amex Gold or Platinum (Yet)
Everyone pushes Amex Gold 4x restaurants and Platinum $695 annual fee. I did the math.
Amex Gold: $250 annual fee. You need to spend $6,250 on dining at 4x to break even vs a no-annual-fee 2% card. I spend $5,400 on dining. I lose money.
Amex Platinum: $695 fee. You get lounge access and $200 airline credit. I fly 2x a year. Not worth it.
If you spend $30k+/year and travel monthly, Amex makes sense. If you spend $18k-22k like me, no-annual-fee Chase + Citi beats it. Cashback is king when you're building wealth, not points.

How to Apply Without Hurting Your Score
I applied for all 3 in 14 days. Score dropped 7 points total, recovered in 45 days.
Rule: Apply for Chase first. Chase has 5/24 rule - if you have 5+ cards in last 24 months, auto-denied. So get Chase Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex first, same day if possible (they only pull once).
Then wait 7 days, apply for Citi Custom Cash. Citi pulls different bureau usually, so less impact.
Don't apply for 5 cards at once like YouTube says. 2-3 max in a 2-week window. Then wait 6 months.
