0% Balance Transfer Hack: How I Paid $14,000 Debt With No Interest for 21 Months

Updated for 2026 • Credit Cards • 7 min read

In January 2023, I had $14,237 on 3 cards at 24.99% APR. I was paying $387/month in interest alone.

I was drowning. Then a friend showed me balance transfer cards.

I moved $14,000 to a 0% APR for 21 months card. Paid $3% fee ($420) one time, but paid $0 interest for 21 months. I paid it all off in 19 months and saved $1,847 in interest.

Here is the exact math and which cards still offer this in 2026.

The Best 0% Balance Transfer Cards Right Now

1. Wells Fargo Reflect: 0% for 21 months. 3% transfer fee for first 120 days. This is what I used. 21 months is longest you can get. You need 700+ credit. I got $14k limit with 712 score at that time.

2. Citi Simplicity: 0% for 21 months. Also 3% fee for first 4 months. No late fees ever, which is nice if you are forgetful.

3. BankAmericard: 0% for 21 months. 3% fee. Good if you already bank with BofA, they give higher limits.

Avoid Chase Slate Edge - only 12 months now. Not enough time.

How I Paid It Off in 19 Months (The $736/Month Plan)

$14,000 / 21 months = $667/month to be free. I rounded up to $736 to finish early and have buffer.

I set autopay for $736 on the 15th, right after paycheck. I cut eating out from $400 to $150, canceled 3 subscriptions ($47), and sold my old PS4 ($180).

The key: I did NOT use the old cards again. I froze them in a block of ice literally. Put them in Tupperware with water in freezer. If you transfer balance then run up old cards again, you double your debt. 40% of people do this. Don't.

After 19 months: $0 balance. Credit score went from 712 to 748 because utilization dropped. Then I applied for cashback cards and started making money instead of paying interest.

The Mistakes That Cost People $1,000+

Mistake 1: Missing payment by 1 day. Most 0% cards cancel promo if you pay late once. Interest goes to 26% retroactive on some. Set autopay for minimum at least, then manual extra.

Mistake 2: Not transferring within 60-120 days. The 3% fee becomes 5% after promo window. Transfer within first week.

Mistake 3: Transferring to same bank. You cannot transfer Chase to Chase. Must be different bank. Chase balance can't go to another Chase card.

My transfer: Applied Jan 8, approved Jan 10, transferred Jan 12, money moved Jan 16. Paid $420 fee, saved $1,847. Net savings $1,427.
